11th Annual Bradenton Area River Regatta Roared to Life with High-Speed Formula 1 Racing on the Manatee River
The Manatee River transformed into a high-speed raceway Saturday as the 11th annual Bradenton Area River Regatta returned with a full slate of Formula 1 powerboat racing, drawing large crowds to downtown Bradenton and the Palmetto riverfront.
The event marked the opening of the 2026 national powerboat racing circuit, bringing competitors from across the country to Southwest Florida for the season’s first showdown. Thousands of spectators lined Riverwalk, filled waterfront parks and gathered along the Green Bridge, which was closed to vehicle traffic to provide a prime viewing location overlooking the course.
This year’s featured class included Formula 1 powerboats, among the fastest in the world. The lightweight, open-cockpit boats can reach speeds of 130 to 135 miles per hour and generate 5 to 6 G-forces as drivers navigate tight turns at high speed. The combination of acceleration, sharp cornering and engine roar created a dramatic start to the racing season.
Organizers said the Bradenton event is considered one of the largest spectator stops on the powerboat circuit and continues to grow in national visibility. Dozens of racers are competing for early-season points that will impact rankings as the tour continues across the country.
In addition to the on-water action, the regatta featured live entertainment, family-friendly activities, food vendors and displays along the riverfront. Fireworks and a drone show kicked off the festivities Friday evening, adding to what organizers describe as one of the biggest free events of the year for Bradenton residents and visitors.
City leaders noted the regatta's economic and community impact, citing strong turnout and increased activity at local businesses throughout the weekend. The event has become a signature annual tradition for the Bradenton area, combining tourism, community pride and high-adrenaline sport.
As the 2026 racing season begins, teams will next travel to Biloxi, Mississippi, in April to continue the national Formula 1 powerboat circuit.
