7-Year-Old Escapes Injury After Being Hit by Car Near School Bus
A 7-year-old boy escaped injury after being struck by a car while crossing to board his school bus Wednesday morning in Bradenton.
The incident occurred at 8:10 a.m. at the intersection of 61st Avenue East and 5th Street East, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). A Manatee County school bus had stopped with its flashing red lights, stop bar, and stop signs deployed, signaling vehicles to halt as children boarded.
Despite these precautions, a 23-year-old Bradenton woman driving a sedan made a left turn from 5th Street East onto 61st Avenue East. Witnesses say a crossing guard blew her whistle, prompting the driver to stop momentarily. However, the car moved forward again just as the boy began crossing the street, striking him.
Emergency responders from Manatee County EMS assessed the child at the scene and confirmed he was uninjured. The boy was able to continue his day with no apparent physical harm.
FHP reported that the driver was cited for failing to stop for the school bus and driving without insurance. Additionally, her license was found to be suspended for an unrelated matter.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing as officials review the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities remind motorists to stay vigilant around school buses to ensure the safety of young pedestrians.
