73-Year-Old Cyclist Killed in Palmetto Intersection Crash
A tragic accident claimed the life of a 73-year-old bicyclist Friday morning at a Manatee County intersection, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The collision occurred around 9:17 a.m. at the junction of U.S. 19 and 61st Street East in Palmetto.
Authorities report that the bicyclist had been stopped at a stop sign on 61st Street East before entering the intersection. At the same time, a sedan driven by a 26-year-old Tampa man was traveling north on U.S. 19 in the left lane. The sedan struck the cyclist as he rode into the intersection. The bicyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
The driver of the sedan sustained minor injuries in the collision. The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
