American Flags Line Green Bridge, Creating Tribute to Veterans and Community
Drivers traveling between Palmetto and Bradenton are now greeted by a striking display of American flags lining the Green Bridge, transforming a routine commute into a symbol of patriotism and unity.
The project began with a simple moment. Palmetto resident Shannon Glasgow, president of USA Fence, noticed a single American flag still flying on the bridge after the Bradenton Area River Regatta concluded in late February. Seeing the flag each morning left a lasting impression and sparked the idea of expanding the display.
With support from Bradenton Mayor Gene Brown and Palmetto Mayor Dan West, Glasgow moved forward with plans to line the bridge with flags in anticipation of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary. After receiving approval, new flags were purchased and installed across the span, creating a visual tribute seen daily by thousands of motorists.
The effort also carries a deeply personal meaning for Glasgow. His father, H.L. Butch Glasgow, founder of USA Fence, passed away earlier this year. The display serves as a tribute to his father’s strong patriotism and love for the Manatee County community.
In addition to honoring family and country, the installation includes a symbolic element. The 22 flag poles along the bridge represent the often-cited statistic that 22 veterans die by suicide each day in the United States. Organizers say the display is meant to quietly recognize veterans and the sacrifices they have made.
City leaders anticipate the flags will remain in place through the summer, including the Independence Day holiday, and possibly longer.
Since the installation, the community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many residents sharing that the display adds a sense of pride and brightness to their daily routines.
What started as a single flag left behind has grown into a meaningful tribute that reflects patriotism, remembrance, and a shared sense of community across Manatee County.
