Anna Maria Oyster Bar Settles Federal Discrimination Case Amid Community Support Efforts
Anna Maria Oyster Bar Inc., a restaurant group based in Bradenton, Florida, has settled with the U.S. Department of Justice over allegations of discriminatory hiring practices. The company was found to have required lawful permanent residents to present specific documents to verify work authorization, violating the Immigration and Nationality Act. As part of the settlement, the restaurant group will pay a civil penalty, implement employee training, revise employment policies, and undergo departmental monitoring to ensure compliance.
Founded in 1995 by John Horne, Anna Maria Oyster Bar has expanded to multiple locations and is recognized for its community involvement. Following Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which caused significant damage to local businesses, the restaurant group played a pivotal role in recovery efforts. They collaborated with partners to establish a supply chain to Anna Maria Island, ensuring essential supplies reached those in need. The company also offered free meals to veterans and active-duty military members and introduced the AMI Sunset Cocktail, with proceeds supporting hurricane relief efforts.
In response to the hurricanes' impact on the local hospitality industry, Anna Maria Oyster Bar, in collaboration with The Center of Anna Maria Island and the Manatee County Tourist Development Council, organized the "Rock 'N' Support" benefit concert. Held on November 15, 2024, at the Bradenton Area Convention Center, the event featured performances by Lynyrd Skynyrd and special guest Marcus King. All proceeds from the concert were directed to Shuckin’ Good Cause and The Center of Anna Maria Island’s Hurricane Relief Fund, providing grant assistance to displaced hospitality workers.
In May 2024, John Horne announced plans to transition out of the CEO role, appointing Eleni Sokos as his successor. Sokos, who has been with the company since October 2022, brings a background in the restaurant industry and a commitment to community engagement.
While addressing the recent settlement, Anna Maria Oyster Bar continues to focus on its mission of serving the community, both through its dining experiences and its active participation in local recovery and support initiatives.
