Bellamy-Wells Turkey Drive Feeds Hundreds in Annual Thanksgiving Tradition
This morning, the community came together in the spirit of giving at the Annual Bellamy-Wells Thanksgiving Turkey Drive. More than 300 boxed Thanksgiving meals were distributed to needy families, ensuring they enjoyed a warm holiday meal.
Spearheaded by Sheriff Rick Wells and University of Miami football Hall of Fame player Ray Bellamy, the drive has become a beloved tradition, reflecting the values of compassion and community service. The initiative honors the legacy of former Manatee County Deputy Sylvester Bellamy, Ray’s older brother and the first black deputy in Manatee County. Deputy Bellamy broke the color barrier at the Manatee Sheriff’s Office in the mid-1960s.
Volunteers from various organizations, including the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Bradenton Police Department, Palmetto Police Department, Lincoln Memorial Middle School, local churches, and nonprofits, worked tirelessly to pack and load the meals. Each box contained all the ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, designed to provide nourishment and hope during the holiday season.
The Bellamy-Wells Turkey Drive has grown year after year, creating a meaningful impact on the lives of many. As Thanksgiving approaches, this initiative serves as a heartwarming reminder of the power of generosity and the importance of community support.
