Bradenton Area EDC Forms Task Force After Contract Rejection
The Bradenton Area Economic Development Corp. (EDC) has created a 90-day task force to address concerns raised by Manatee County commissioners, who voted 4-3 earlier this month against renewing the organization’s $336,900 annual contract. The decision cut 26% of the EDC’s budget, prompting the group to seek another opportunity to secure county support.
EDC leaders, including Board Chair Andy Stultz, say the task force will present data and information they believe was overlooked during the Sept. 16 vote. The organization hopes to convince commissioners to approve a new contract at the same annual value.
Commissioners have cited issues with transparency, accountability, and return on investment, arguing the EDC relies on outdated strategies. County officials expect measurable results from their economic development partners.
EDC President and CEO Sharon Hillstrom emphasized that the group plays a key role in attracting high-wage jobs and capital investment. While Hillstrom will not serve on the task force, Stultz defended her leadership and professional record.
The county, meanwhile, continues its own economic development work and reviews EDC performance, noting eight projects brought forward during the prior five-year contract. The task force will now attempt to rebuild trust and renegotiate terms within 90 days.
