Bradenton Bar Shooter Sentenced to 17 Years in Prison
A Bradenton man who opened fire inside a downtown bar last summer, injuring two people, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.
Derrell Scott, 54, pleaded no contest to two counts of second-degree attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In addition to his prison term, he will serve 10 years of probation upon release.
The shooting occurred on July 26 inside the Loaded Barrel Tavern on 12th Street West. Authorities said Scott had been arguing with another patron when he left the establishment, returned with a firearm, and began shooting.
The man Scott had been arguing with was struck in the torso, and a female bystander suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.
Surveillance footage from multiple city cameras captured Scott fleeing the scene in a maroon SUV. Detectives later identified him as the shooter and tracked him to Osceola County, where he was arrested three days after the incident.
Scott’s sentencing closes a case that shocked the downtown Bradenton community and led to increased calls for bar security and violence prevention efforts in the area.
