Bradenton Beach Wildlife Center Faces Uphill Battle to Reopen After Hurricane Damage
The Wildlife Inc. Education & Rehabilitation Center in Bradenton Beach is struggling to reopen after Hurricane Helene caused significant damage to the facility in September 2024. For more than 30 years, the nonprofit organization has served as a critical sanctuary for injured and orphaned wildlife in Manatee County.
The hurricane caused devastating flooding to the center, with over three feet of water inundating the property. Essential equipment, food supplies, and personal belongings were destroyed, and the loss of vital vehicles for rescues and daily operations has further hampered recovery efforts. Despite the damage, the center's founders have resumed caring for a limited number of animals while temporarily living in a nearby apartment.
Rebuilding efforts have been slow due to complications with insurance claims and delays in securing contractors. Wildlife Inc. operates entirely on private donations and receives no government funding, making financial support from the community essential. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to raise funds for repairs and replacement equipment. Appliance donations, such as freezers and refrigerators, have already been made to help the center begin its recovery.
The center is working diligently to restore its full operations and meet the growing needs of local wildlife. Community volunteers are aiding cleanup and rebuilding efforts, while financial contributions are critical for progress.
Wildlife Inc. hopes to reopen fully in the coming months, depending on the speed of repairs and logistical challenges. Donations to support their recovery can be made through their GoFundMe page, and volunteers are encouraged to assist in rebuilding the facility.
