Bradenton Beach Wildlife Rescuers Rally to Recover After Hurricane’s Devastating Impact
BRADENTON BEACH, Fla. — For more than three decades, Gail and Ed Straight have devoted their lives to rescuing and rehabilitating injured wildlife across Manatee County, operating their nonprofit, Wildlife Inc., from their Bradenton Beach home. Their commitment has provided sanctuary to thousands of injured animals, from rabbits to owls to deer, offering a lifeline to creatures in need.
However, the couple now finds themselves in need of assistance. Last month, Hurricane Helene brought a massive storm surge to the Tampa Bay area, inundating their home of 50 years with feet of water. The floodwaters damaged nearly everything they own, including critical supplies and equipment used for wildlife rehabilitation. Despite this devastating personal loss, Gail has continued her efforts, answering calls to care for injured animals and offering what assistance she can amid the challenges of rebuilding.
While their personal losses include both cars and essential items, including furniture and communication equipment, the Straights remain committed to their mission. Gail’s resolve has seen her continue Wildlife Inc.’s efforts, though she admits they’ve had to limit intake due to the immediate focus on restoring their home and facilities.
The couple, who rely primarily on donations and grants to fund their efforts, now face an unprecedented challenge in navigating the financial impact of the storm. Funds given to Wildlife Inc. are designated solely for the nonprofit, meaning Gail and Ed must identify alternative solutions to rebuild their home and replace their personal belongings. Despite these hurdles, they remain optimistic and determined, with Gail prepared to pursue all options, including loans, to restore normalcy.
Throughout their 30 years of service, Wildlife Inc. and its dedicated team of volunteers have rescued and rehabilitated over 150,000 animals. Now, the Straights and their home are the ones needing help. True to her resilient spirit, Gail remains confident that, just like the animals they have helped over the years, they, too, will persevere.
