Bradenton Breaks Ground on City Park Revitalization Project
A long-anticipated redevelopment project officially moved from planning to construction as Bradenton city leaders, community partners and local residents gathered to break ground on the new City Park project near LECOM Park.
The first phase of the multi-year initiative will include construction of a new baseball field and site improvements on property adjacent to LECOM Park, the spring training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. City officials say the project represents a significant investment in recreation, youth sports and neighborhood revitalization.
Bradenton City Administrator Rob Perry marked the start of construction by highlighting the project’s role in shaping the city’s future while building upon its historic past.
Community leaders emphasized the importance of quality recreational spaces and youth athletic programs, noting their ability to strengthen neighborhoods, bring families together and create opportunities for future generations.
The project is the result of a collaborative effort involving the City of Bradenton, the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, the School District of Manatee County and local athletic organizations. Officials praised the partnership as an example of how community stakeholders can work together to create lasting benefits for local residents.
In addition to providing new recreational amenities, the redevelopment honors the rich baseball history of the site. The original City Park Field served as a gathering place for baseball in Bradenton more than a century ago and was home to the historic Bradenton Nine Devils, a Black semi-professional baseball team that played from the late 1930s through the mid-1950s.
City leaders described the groundbreaking as the first step in a larger multi-phase vision that will bring additional recreational facilities, community spaces and development opportunities to the surrounding area.
Construction on Phase 1 is expected to be completed before next year’s spring training season, while the full City Park redevelopment project is scheduled for completion in 2028.
Officials say the investment will serve as both a tribute to Bradenton’s baseball heritage and a foundation for future generations to enjoy expanded recreational opportunities for decades to come.
