Bradenton Family, NAACP Seek Answers Following Officer-Involved Shooting During Search Warrant

A Bradenton family, alongside the Manatee County NAACP, is calling for transparency and accountability after the fatal shooting of Willie Bell during a police operation last month.

According to the Bradenton Police Department, officers were executing a high-risk search warrant at Bell’s home on March 10 as part of an ongoing drug investigation. Authorities stated that an officer discharged their weapon after Bell allegedly refused to drop a firearm.

The incident remains under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. Findings will be submitted to the State Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether the use of force was justified under Florida law.

Family members and community leaders say many questions remain unanswered. During a gathering outside Bradenton City Hall, NAACP leadership and supporters emphasized the need for the release of body-worn camera footage and additional details surrounding the events leading up to the shooting.

Bell’s family described him as a devoted father and grandfather who had made efforts to turn his life around in recent years. They also noted that he lived with significant health challenges, including seizures and partial paralysis. He had resided in a home owned by Ward Temple AME Church for nearly 8 years.

Community members expressed a desire for clarity and closure as the investigation continues. Representatives from the Bradenton Police Department stated they have maintained communication with the NAACP and local residents and reaffirmed their cooperation with the ongoing state investigation.

Officials indicated that once the FDLE completes its review and submits findings to the State Attorney’s Office, the results will be made public.
