Bradenton Launches “Don’t Block the Box” Initiative to Ease Traffic and Improve Safety
The City of Bradenton has launched a new initiative to remind drivers not to “block the box,” aiming to ease congestion and improve safety at busy intersections.
When motorists enter an intersection without sufficient space to clear it before the light changes, they block cross traffic and create gridlock, posing risks to other drivers, pedestrians, and even first responders. To help reduce these incidents, the city is adding new pavement markings at several major intersections as part of the campaign.
The intersections scheduled for marking include 1st Street and Manatee Avenue, 1st Street and 6th Avenue, 9th Street West and Manatee Avenue, 9th Street West and 6th Avenue, 9th Street West and 8th Avenue, 10th Street West and 6th Avenue, and 12th Street West and 6th Avenue. Work has already been completed at 1st Street and 9th Avenue, as well as 1st Street and 13th Avenue.
Plans are also underway for similar markings at the intersection of Manatee Avenue and 75th Street West. The Bradenton Police Department will continue to conduct enforcement.
Drivers who “block the box” can be fined $166 for obstructing traffic. City officials hope the new markings and continued enforcement will keep intersections clear, reduce delays, and make roadways safer for everyone.
