Bradenton Warns Residents After CodeRED Emergency Alert System Targeted in Cyberattack
Bradenton officials issued a public warning Monday after learning that CodeRED, the emergency alert system used by the city, was affected by a nationwide cyberattack that accessed data from the platform’s older system.
City leaders were notified by CodeRED that unauthorized individuals had gained access to certain user information, prompting the company to take the system offline nationwide. Potentially compromised data includes names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and passwords associated with CodeRED user profiles.
According to the city, many Bradenton residents signed up for alerts as guests and never created a login, meaning a large portion of users will not need to take further action. However, those who did set up an account and reused the same password on other websites are encouraged to update those accounts as a precaution.
Bradenton has relied on CodeRED since 2018 to distribute emergency notifications, particularly during hurricanes and other time-sensitive incidents. With the platform currently offline, officials reported no service disruptions but emphasized that residents should remain alert and take steps to secure their personal information if necessary.
The company is continuing to investigate the breach while restoring its systems.
