Construction to Begin Next Week on 63rd Avenue East Roadway Improvement Project
Manatee County will begin construction on the 63rd Avenue E. Roadway Improvement Project, from U.S. 301 to Tuttle Avenue, on Tuesday, July 14. Initial work will begin with underground utility relocations and improvements near Prospect Road, then progress throughout the corridor.
The approximately 1.12-mile project will widen 63rd Avenue E. from two lanes to four lanes between U.S. 301 and Tuttle Avenue, improving safety, increasing roadway capacity and enhancing mobility for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. Planned improvements include a new center turn lane west of Prospect Road, a raised median east of Prospect Road, buffered bicycle lanes, sidewalks on both sides of the roadway, street lighting and new traffic signals at 33rd Street and Tuttle Avenue.
“The 63rd Avenue East Roadway Improvement Project is a major investment in the future of Manatee County’s transportation network,” said District 4 Commissioner Mike Rahn. “These improvements will make this important thoroughfare safer for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists while increasing capacity along one of our key east-west corridors through the heart of Manatee County’s industrial and employment center. This project will improve mobility today while supporting continued economic growth for decades to come.”
In addition to transportation improvements, the project will deliver long-term stormwater benefits for the surrounding area. The recently completed Pearce Drain Flood Mitigation Project constructed new stormwater improvements that increase drainage capacity for both the 63rd Avenue E. corridor and nearby neighborhoods that have experienced flooding. These improvements lay the groundwork for the roadway project while also providing lasting flood mitigation benefits for the surrounding community. The stormwater system will be further enhanced by an upcoming automated outfall project serving the Rio Mar community, adding another layer of protection during heavy-rain events.
Construction on 63rd Avenue East is expected to take approximately two years to complete. During that time, work will occur in multiple phases, requiring temporary lane closures, shifting traffic patterns and periodic delays as crews advance through the corridor. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
Residents, businesses and commuters are encouraged to bookmark the project website for the latest construction updates, traffic advisories and lane-closure information updates throughout construction. Because traffic conditions will change as construction progresses, the website will serve as the primary source for timely project information.
