Cortez Bridge Utility Relocation Project Update
The Cortez Bridge Utility Relocation Project continues into early 2025 as part of infrastructure upgrades in Manatee County. As of December 22, the contractor has completed the installation of a 24-inch water main pipe beneath the intracoastal waterway, connecting the west and east sides of the Cortez Bridge. Construction activities are currently paused for the holidays, from December 23, 2024, to January 5, 2025, and will resume on January 6, 2025.
The next phase of the project includes the installation of a 20-inch force main pipe, scheduled for early 2025. To accommodate this work, operations will proceed 24/7, ensuring the timely completion of the pipe pull across the Intracoastal.
Temporary closures and detours will remain in effect through spring 2025. The south sidewalk and bike lane along Cortez Road West, west of the Cortez Bridge, will be closed, with detours for pedestrians and cyclists. Specific closures include sections of 119th Street West, Avenue B, and several surrounding roads, redirecting vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Drivers and pedestrians should anticipate intermittent lane closures on Cortez Road West and flagging operations in eastbound and westbound lanes for equipment and material transport. Construction crews are working diligently to minimize disruptions while ensuring safety.
Manatee County advises travelers to plan ahead and follow posted detour signs within the project area. Weather and other unforeseen circumstances may impact the schedule, but the project aims to enhance infrastructure while maintaining public safety.
