Cortez Bridge Utility Relocation Project Moves Forward with Road Closures and Detours Through 2026
Manatee County officials have announced ongoing utility relocation work in preparation for the Florida Department of Transportation’s upcoming construction of the new Cortez Bridge, slated to begin in 2026. The project is currently active on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with after-hours and weekend work occurring as needed.
Work is impacting multiple locations on both sides of Cortez Road West. The north side, east of the bridge, will see a full closure of 127th Street West up to 126th Street West through early summer 2025. Additional closures on 124th Court West are expected to continue into late summer.
The south side of Cortez Road West will undergo a series of closures through summer 2025, including 124th Street West, 124th Street Court West, and parts of Central Avenue and Avenue A. Pedestrian detours and bike lane closures will also be in place between 119th Street West and Avenue B.
On the west side of the bridge, sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours will be followed by the closure of the outside merge lane on eastbound Cortez Road West. These activities are anticipated to extend into spring 2026.
The construction involves underground and open-cut pipe installations, dewatering systems, and the use of heavy equipment. Intermittent lane closures are expected along Cortez Road West. Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution when traveling through the work zones.
A detailed detour map highlights affected areas, including a major closure from April 21 to late June 2025, blocking all vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle access near Cortez Park and 127th Street West.
