Cortez Bridge Utility Relocation Project Moves Forward with Lane Closures and Detours
Manatee County has issued an update on the Cortez Bridge Utility Relocation Project, with construction activity continuing on both sides of Cortez Road W. as part of a long-term infrastructure improvement effort.
On the west side of the bridge, underground pipe installation is underway on both the north and south sides of Cortez Road. This work will continue through spring 2026 and will include intermittent lane closures, flagging operations, and temporary travel, bike lane, and sidewalk closures. Travelers are advised to follow posted detours and be alert for changes in traffic patterns.
On the east side of the bridge, contractors are preparing 127th Street W. for paving. This work is scheduled for completion by Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at which point the road will reopen to traffic. However, side streets on the south side of Cortez Road W., between 124th Street W. and Avenue A, will stay closed until all connections and tie-ins are completed.
Construction crews are on-site Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with typical activities including dewatering, drilling, pipe installation, and heavy equipment operation. Drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians are urged to use caution when navigating near work zones.
The closure between April 21 and early August 2025 affects access for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists in the work zone surrounding the Cortez Bridge, with detours clearly marked to reroute traffic around the area. The detour map includes adjustments for access to residential communities, businesses, and RV resorts such as Harbour Landings, Holiday Cove, and Buttonwood Inlet.
