Cracker Trail Welcome Picnic Leads Into Historic Annual Ride Across Florida
With less than a month to go, organizers are finalizing details for the first-ever Cracker Trail Welcome Picnic at Manatee Village Historical Park on February 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will kick off a weeklong celebration connected to the Florida Cracker Trail Association’s annual cross-state ride, one of the oldest and most unique heritage events in the state.
The Cracker Trail Welcome Picnic is designed as a relaxed gathering where the public can learn about Florida’s historic cattle-driving routes and the cowboy culture that developed here. Participants will have the chance to explore exhibits and talk with riders before the official ride begins the following day.
The Florida Cracker Trail Ride is a long-standing annual tradition that honors the state’s early cattle and horse heritage. Each February, riders travel on horseback across historic trail routes from just east of Bradenton to Fort Pierce, covering roughly 116 to 120 miles over about a week. Riders generally average 15 to 20 miles a day along a route that follows parts of State Roads 64 and 66 and other historic corridors across the peninsula. The trek culminates in a parade through downtown Fort Pierce, celebrating the cultural legacy of the Florida Cracker cowmen.
The ride is organized by the Florida Cracker Trail Association, a volunteer non-profit dedicated to “Keeping History Alive” by educating the public about Old Florida pioneer ways, agriculture, animal husbandry, and the frontier lifestyle.
Participants can register for the full week of riding or join for part of the journey. Membership in the association is required to take part in official events, and riders of all ages and disciplines are welcome.
The annual ride not only retraces the historic cattle and horse drive that once served as an important commercial route across Florida but also offers a rare opportunity to experience the state’s rural landscapes and living history up close. Locals and visitors alike are encouraged to attend the Welcome Picnic, enjoy the outdoor festivities, and learn more about this enduring piece of Florida culture.
