A long-envisioned infrastructure project that dates back to 1968 is finally coming to life in Manatee County. The highly anticipated 44th Avenue East extension — complete with a new overpass across Interstate 75 — will officially open to the public on Saturday, August 9.
First conceptualized as part of the 1968 Concept Development Plan and later included in Manatee County's 1989 Comprehensive Plan and Capital Improvements Plan, the 44th Avenue East corridor has been in the making for over half a century. It was designed to meet the growing transportation needs of a rapidly expanding population while providing much-needed east-west connectivity.
The project, which broke ground on its first segment in 2013, now culminates in a vital connection that can support approximately 36,000 vehicles per day. It is expected to reduce traffic congestion significantly, diverting more than 21,000 vehicles daily from neighboring State Roads 64 and 70.
One of the project’s most impactful components is the new I-75 overpass, which will give local drivers an alternative to busy highway interchanges. By improving travel efficiency and safety, the new route is expected to enhance regional mobility and contribute to long-term economic development.
The completion of the 44th Avenue East corridor is a landmark achievement in Manatee County’s ongoing efforts to modernize its infrastructure, echoing a vision that began more than 55 years ago. For more information on the project’s history and scope, visit 44thaveeast.com.
This was supposed to be an interchange, and should have been built as an interchange. I-75 is an absolute nightmare in this area, so the ramps would help to alleviate some of the daily congestion.
