Deputy of the Year Honored for Heroic Beach Rescue
Sergeant Brett Getman has been named the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office 2025 Deputy of the Year after a life-saving rescue on August 9, 2025, that pulled two swimmers from a dangerous current off a local beach.
During a routine beach patrol, Sergeant Getman and Deputy Vincent Bowman were alerted to two individuals struggling in the water more than 100 yards from shore. With the current rapidly carrying the swimmers farther out, Getman immediately notified dispatch to alert the Marine Unit, Coast Guard, and Beach Patrol.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Getman removed his gear and entered the water while Deputy Bowman remained on the beach to maintain visual contact and guide incoming responders. Getman reached one of the distressed swimmers, secured him to a float, and kept him conscious as they made the difficult swim back toward shore.
As they reached land, Beach Patrol units arrived. Getman directed them to use their rescue board to reach the second swimmer, who was still struggling to stay above water. Beach Patrol successfully retrieved the second individual, and the Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit transported him to a nearby marina where EMS was standing by. Both men were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The Sheriff’s Office recognized Getman for his rapid response, calm leadership, and personal courage in a situation where seconds mattered. His actions, combined with coordinated efforts from Bowman, Beach Patrol, and the Marine Unit, prevented what could have been a double drowning.
Sergeant Getman’s commitment to duty and willingness to risk his life exemplify the highest standards of the agency, earning him the title of 2025 Deputy of the Year.
