DeSantis Signs Property Tax and Transparency Bills During Bradenton Visit
Gov. Ron DeSantis visited Bradenton on Wednesday to sign two pieces of legislation designed to increase oversight of local government finances and limit the ability of local governments to raise property taxes.
The first measure places additional restrictions on local governments seeking to increase property taxes, a move supporters say will help protect homeowners and businesses from rising tax burdens. The legislation is intended to provide greater accountability when local officials consider tax increases and to encourage governments to prioritize spending within existing budgets.
The second bill focuses on fiscal transparency by requiring local governments to make more financial information readily available to the public online. Under the new law, taxpayers will have expanded access to budget details, including government expenditures, employee salaries and other financial records.
DeSantis said the measures are aimed at giving residents a clearer understanding of how their tax dollars are spent while strengthening safeguards against unnecessary tax increases. The legislation is part of a broader effort by state leaders to improve government accountability and provide taxpayers with greater insight into local spending decisions.
The bills come as property values and tax concerns remain a significant issue across Florida, particularly in fast-growing communities where residents have expressed concerns about rising costs. Supporters argue the new requirements will make local government finances more transparent and help residents stay informed about budget decisions that affect their communities.
The laws are expected to impact counties, municipalities and other local government entities throughout Florida by increasing public access to financial information and tightening requirements surrounding property tax increases.
