Dive Into Reading Celebrates 10 Summers of Building Readers and Changing Lives
Shuckin’ Good Cause and Oysters Rock Hospitality are celebrating the successful completion of the tenth summer of Dive Into Reading, a literacy and mentorship program created to help elementary students strengthen reading skills, build confidence, and combat summer learning loss.
What began in 2017 inside Anna Maria Oyster Bar Ellenton with a small group of rising third graders has grown into a regional program serving students throughout Manatee and Sarasota Counties. During its tenth summer, Dive Into Reading welcomed 373 students, supported by volunteer mentors, educators, restaurant teams, and community partners who came together each morning over breakfast, books, and encouragement.
Over the past ten summers, the program has expanded to 17 Title I elementary schools, and six host locations, and has welcomed more than 3,000 students through its doors, helping young readers strengthen literacy skills while building confidence one book, one mentor, and one morning at a time. This year, every participating student also received a backpack filled with school supplies to help them begin the new school year prepared for success.
Dive Into Reading reflects Oysters Rock Hospitality’s Pillars of Philanthropy through Education, demonstrating that hospitality extends far beyond the dining room. By bringing together students, mentors, schools, restaurant teams, and community partners, the program creates meaningful connections while helping children return to school more confident and prepared to succeed. As Dive Into Reading celebrates its tenth summer, it remains a powerful reminder that a warm breakfast, an open book, and a caring mentor can make a lasting difference in a child’s life.
