Dive Into Reading Returns: Local Restaurants and Volunteers Fight Summer Literacy Slide
A beloved summer tradition is making its return as the Dive Into Reading program once again brings together volunteers, young readers, and local restaurants to combat the “summer slide” in literacy. Founded by John and Amanda Horne, owners of the Anna Maria Oyster Bar, the initiative provides reading support, mentorship, and a warm breakfast to rising 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-grade students during their summer break.
Now in its eighth year, Dive Into Reading partners with the School District of Manatee County, local law enforcement, and numerous community volunteers to enhance reading fluency and comprehension among early elementary students. The goal is to prevent learning loss during the summer months and build confidence through one-on-one reading sessions.
The Bradenton Police Department is among the many returning supporters. Officers and staff regularly join students for breakfast and books, building bonds with the next generation while promoting literacy. This year, BPD volunteers will meet students on Mondays at Central Café and Wednesdays at O’Bricks.
What began as a pilot effort at Anna Maria Oyster Bar has since grown into a countywide movement, recognized as a model for community-based educational support. The program also helps children develop social skills, set reading goals, and experience the joy of sharing stories with caring adult mentors.
Residents who wish to get involved can sign up to volunteer at diveintoreading.org. No teaching experience is required—just a love of reading and a desire to make a difference.
As students crack open their books over breakfast this summer, Dive Into Reading continues to prove that a small investment of time can make a lifelong impact.
