Emergency Management Chief Honored for Heroic Act at BOCC Meeting
In a moment of true selflessness and quick thinking, Emergency Management Chief Matt Myers was recognized with a Heroism Award at Tuesday's Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting.
On September 26, as pre-hurricane force winds swept through the area, a routine task became life-threatening outside the Emergency Operations Center. Public Safety custodian Theresa Wunderlich was taking out the trash when she saw a piece of scrap metal detach from the roof and strike a parked car. Concerned about the damage, she alerted Chief Myers to document the incident.
As they assessed the scene, the powerful winds suddenly tore another piece of debris from the building. Immediately, Chief Myers sprang into action, pushing Theresa out of harm’s way just before the metal could strike her. His swift response prevented what could have been a serious injury.
Chief Myers was honored with the prestigious Heroism Award for his bravery and decisive action, a testament to his dedication to public safety and his unwavering commitment to protecting others.
