FDOT Begins Safety Upgrades on Manatee County Drawbridges
Installation of new safety technology designed to protect pedestrians and cyclists is now underway on several drawbridges in Manatee County, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
Crews have started installing pedestrian and bicycle detection systems, along with conduits, electrical components, and connections to the bridge tender buildings. The upgrades are intended to enhance safety by improving awareness of individuals using the sidewalks and crossings when bridges are in operation.
The project includes improvements on three key bridges in the area:
State Road 684 Sarasota Pass Bridge along Cortez Road
State Road 64 Sarasota Pass Bridge serving Anna Maria
State Road 789 Longboat Key Pass Bridge on Longboat Key
Testing of the new systems began in February, marking the initial phase of the project rollout.
During construction, residents and visitors can expect intermittent sidewalk and lane closures. Most traffic impacts will occur overnight, with lane closures scheduled between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. to minimize daytime disruptions.
Transportation officials anticipate the work will be completed by late spring, bringing updated safety features to some of the county’s busiest coastal crossings.
