The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will host a preconstruction public information session on Tuesday, October 20, to provide updates on the $123 million Cortez Road Bridge Replacement Project.
The open house will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at Kirkwood Church, 6101 Cortez Road W. in Bradenton. FDOT project representatives will be available to discuss construction activities, traffic changes, and the anticipated project schedule.
The project includes replacing the existing Cortez Bridge with a new fixed-span bridge featuring 65 feet of vertical clearance, allowing marine traffic to pass underneath without a drawbridge opening. Improvements will extend approximately 0.9 miles from Gulf Drive/SR 789 to 123rd Street West.
Construction will occur in two phases to maintain traffic flow. During the first phase, crews will build the northern half of the new bridge alongside the existing structure. Traffic will then shift onto the completed portion, allowing demolition of the existing bridge and construction of the southern half during Phase 2, which is expected to begin in mid-2028.
Initial construction activities will include utility relocations, roadway adjustments, and a new connection to Hunters Point Way. Traffic will shift slightly south at both bridge approaches to accommodate construction. Barges and temporary trestles will be used throughout the project.
Construction is expected to last approximately 1,200 days, or just over three years. The upcoming public meeting follows a design presentation held in January 2023 and comes as FDOT prepares to begin construction.
Residents unable to attend can submit questions through the FDOT project website or contact FDOT project manager Juan Carrillo at 941-708-4429.
