Flavors of Literacy Fundraiser Highlights Manatee Literacy Council’s Mission to Empower Adult Learners
Roughly one in five adults in Manatee County struggles to read above a fifth-grade level, a challenge the Manatee Literacy Council continues to address through education and community engagement.
To support its programs, the organization will host its annual Flavors of Literacy fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Manatee River Garden Club. The event will feature international foods and beer pairings, celebrating global cultures while raising funds for adult literacy initiatives.
Low literacy can affect nearly every aspect of daily life — from filling out job applications and managing finances to shopping for groceries or reading to children. Those with limited English proficiency face additional barriers in healthcare, housing, and employment. Studies show the effects can span generations, with children of parents who struggle to read being more likely to experience literacy challenges themselves.
Founded in 1978, the Manatee Literacy Council offers free and confidential services to adults throughout the community, including instruction in reading, writing, and English language skills. Programs range from one-on-one tutoring to group classes in citizenship preparation, family and workplace literacy, and virtual learning options.
Program Coordinator Marcela Venegas said that many participants have gone on to secure better jobs, pass citizenship exams, and gain confidence in reading to their children or grandchildren.
