Flight to the North Pole: Bringing Holiday Magic to Children with Terminal Illnesses and Disabilities
For hundreds of children facing terminal illnesses and disabilities, the 39th Annual Flight to the North Pole offered a day filled with joy, wonder, and unforgettable memories. Organized by the Manatee Sheriff's Charity, this cherished event has become a beacon of hope and happiness since its creation in 1985 by Eastern Airlines flight attendants and Manatee County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) employee Sidney Ettedgui.
Held at the Feld Entertainment headquarters, the event transformed the venue into a winter wonderland complete with festive treats, snowy landscapes, holiday crafts, live animal encounters, and rides on the enchanting North Pole Express. The highlight of the day came when Santa’s grand entrance in a roaring Monster Jam truck. He was joined by Mrs. Claus in his cozy workshop to meet each child and present personalized gifts.
The Flight to the North Pole event began as a way to uplift children battling life-threatening conditions during the holidays. Initially a small initiative supported by Eastern Airlines and local volunteers, the program quickly gained momentum under the guidance of Ettedgui and the unwavering support of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. Over nearly four decades, it has evolved into a signature community celebration.
Sheriff Rick Wells and his team actively welcomed families, spread holiday cheer, and ensured a seamless day of festivities. The event was made possible through the generosity of countless volunteers, donors, and sponsors, with Feld Entertainment hosting this year’s magical day.
The Flight to the North Pole continues to embody the spirit of the season, creating cherished memories for children and their families. By bringing the community together in this meaningful way, the Manatee Sheriff's Charity ensures that the magic of the holidays shines bright for those who need it most.
