Florida Awards $1.4 Million to Strengthen Fire Departments, Including Local Agencies in Manatee Region
More than $1.4 million in state funding has been awarded to support fire departments across Florida, with several local agencies receiving grants to enhance emergency response capabilities and improve firefighter safety.
The funding, announced by Blaise Ingoglia in his role as State Fire Marshal, is aimed at ensuring firefighters have the tools, equipment, and training needed to respond effectively to emergencies while also reducing long-term health risks associated with the profession.
Locally, East Manatee Fire Rescue received $12,248.25 through the Firefighter Cancer Decontamination Grant, while the Town of Longboat Key Fire Department was awarded $7,976.29 for similar safety-focused equipment. The Parrish Fire District secured $20,672.20 through the Firefighter Assistance Grant to bolster operational readiness.
Additional large-scale investments were made through the state’s Fiscal Year 2025–2026 budget, including $1 million for a new fire training tower in the DeSoto County Fire Department and $400,000 for brush fire trucks in the Hardee County Public Safety Department. These projects are designed to improve preparedness for both structural and wildland fire incidents.
State officials emphasized that the grants not only support emergency response efforts but also address growing concerns about firefighter health, particularly exposure to cancer-causing chemicals encountered during fire suppression activities. The funding will assist departments in purchasing specialized equipment, protective gear, and training resources to mitigate those risks.
Local fire leaders noted the increasing complexity of modern fires and the importance of continued investment in both personnel and infrastructure. The funding is expected to enhance response times, improve training opportunities, and ultimately strengthen public safety across the region.
The grants are distributed through programs administered by the Florida Department of Financial Services, including the Firefighter Cancer Decontamination Grant and the Firefighter Assistance Grant, both of which support departments in protecting firefighters and the communities they serve.
