Florida Clarifies License Plate Frame Rules and Enforcement
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has issued clarification on state law regarding license plate frames and what constitutes an obstruction under Florida law. The guidance is intended to help motorists understand which plate features must remain visible to avoid citations.
Under the clarified rules, license plate frames may not cover or obscure the alphanumeric plate identifier, which includes the letters and numbers used to identify a vehicle uniquely. Frames also may not block the decal located in the top right-hand corner of the plate, where the vehicle’s registration sticker is placed.
The department noted that a frame may partially impinge on the top portion of the plate, provided that law enforcement officers can clearly identify the state that issued the license plate. In addition, information located along the bottom of the plate is not considered a primary identifying feature and may be covered without violating the statute.
Motorists are encouraged to check their license plate frames to ensure compliance, as improperly obscured plates can result in traffic stops or citations.
