Food Bank of Manatee Ramps Up Emergency Efforts as Demand Surges Ahead of Thanksgiving
The Food Bank of Manatee has seen a significant spike in need this November as families face the dual strain of holiday expenses and interruptions in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. In response, the organization held two crisis food distributions that collectively provided thousands of meals to residents experiencing food insecurity. Additionally, 750 families will receive full Thanksgiving dinners this week.
Maribeth Phillips, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee, emphasized that many local households are particularly vulnerable during periods of SNAP disruption. She noted that a large portion of residents rely on every paycheck to get by, and when benefits are reduced or delayed, the food bank becomes an essential resource.
The heightened need coincided with the Empty Bowls event, held on Nov. 14, on Main Street at Lakewood Ranch. The fundraiser features soup tastings from 19 local restaurants, with proceeds supporting the food bank’s mission to provide meals for neighbors in crisis. Hundreds turned out to donate and participate, filling the street with long lines of supporters committed to helping local families.
All contributions made to the Food Bank of Manatee remain within the county, ensuring direct support for local residents. Organizers say community generosity has been strong at a time when it is needed most, enabling the continued purchase and distribution of food during a challenging season for many families.
