Former Palmetto Pastor Sentenced to Life in Prison for Child Sex Crimes
A former Palmetto pastor will spend the remainder of his life in prison after being found guilty on multiple charges involving sexual crimes against children, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities announced Wednesday that Jonathan Elwing was convicted on all twelve charges filed against him. The charges included capital sexual battery, production of child sexual abuse material, and possession of such material. Following the conviction, Elwing was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences.
The investigation began in June 2024 after detectives discovered that Elwing, who was serving as a senior pastor at Palm View First Baptist Church in Palmetto at the time, had used cryptocurrency to purchase child sexual abuse material online.
On June 21, 2024, detectives executed search warrants at both the church and Elwing’s residence. During the search, investigators located explicit images involving children on his cellphone. Elwing resigned from his position at the church prior to his arrest.
As the investigation continued, detectives uncovered additional evidence, including images depicting the sexual abuse of a child, as well as numerous other illicit files. The findings significantly expanded the scope of the case and led to the full list of charges presented in court.
The arrest and subsequent conviction sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly among members of his former congregation, highlighting ongoing concerns about child safety and the presence of such crimes in trusted community institutions.
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the seriousness of the case and the outcome, noting the life sentences reflect the severity of the crimes and the lasting impact on victims.
