Former U.S. Attorney Warns Bradenton Kiwanis of Rising Fraud Risks, Highlights Progress in Fentanyl Crisis
At a recent Bradenton Kiwanis meeting, members heard from Roger Handberg, who delivered an informative presentation on the growing threat of fraud and its impact across communities.
Handberg, who previously served as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida, focused on elder fraud but emphasized that scams are not limited to seniors. He explained that modern schemes are designed to exploit moments of distraction or urgency, making individuals of all ages vulnerable.
The presentation underscored that increased awareness remains one of the most effective tools in preventing fraud. By understanding common tactics used by scammers, individuals can better protect themselves, their families, and others in their networks.
In addition to discussing fraud prevention, Handberg shared positive developments related to the ongoing opioid crisis. He noted that fentanyl-related deaths have shown a decline, attributing the trend to enhanced law enforcement strategies and expanded public education efforts aimed at reducing misuse and increasing awareness of the drug’s dangers.
The Kiwanis meeting served as both a warning and a call to action, encouraging community members to stay informed and share critical information with others.
