Freezing Temperatures Prompt Reminder to Protect Backflow Prevention Devices
As colder weather moves into Manatee County, residents with exposed plumbing are urged to take steps now to protect their backflow prevention assemblies from freezing.
A frozen or damaged backflow preventer can disrupt water service and lead to costly repairs. County officials note that these devices are especially vulnerable during cold snaps and should be insulated in advance, much like plants are protected during a frost.
Customers are advised to insulate all exposed plumbing and backflow preventers using materials such as foam insulation, pool noodles, or blankets. These coverings help retain warmth and reduce the risk of freezing. Plastic bags or other materials that trap moisture should be avoided, as they can increase the likelihood of damage rather than prevent it.
Responsibility for protecting and repairing backflow prevention assemblies lies with the property owner. Officials encourage residents to be proactive, particularly during extended periods of cold weather, to safeguard their water systems and avoid service disruptions.
