Gene Witt Elementary Teacher Wins National Classroom Supply Award
Catherine Burke, a fifth-grade math and science teacher at Gene Witt Elementary School, has been recognized on a national stage through iHeartRadio’s “Thank A Teacher” program, powered by DonorsChoose. Out of more than 37,000 nominations submitted nationwide, only a select few educators received the honor, which includes a $5,000 award for classroom supplies.
Burke was nominated by a former student and their parent, who highlighted her dedication to helping students learn at their own pace and her commitment to tutoring children after school free of charge. She is also known for her active involvement in Gene Witt’s School Advisory Council and PTO meetings, where she shares her perspective as a teacher to support the broader school community.
The $5,000 award will be used directly to enhance her classroom with additional resources and materials, enabling her to continue providing engaging and personalized instruction to her students.
The “Thank A Teacher” program, part of iHeartRadio’s partnership with DonorsChoose, encourages families and communities to recognize outstanding educators who go above and beyond. While the School District of Manatee County is not affiliated with the contest, parents and community members can nominate their favorite public school teachers for future awards at donorschoose.org/iHeartRadio.
Burke’s recognition adds to the growing list of Manatee County educators receiving national attention for their dedication to students and the profession.
