Government Shutdown Impacts Some Veterans Services, Local Support Available
The ongoing federal government shutdown is affecting certain programs for veterans, though many essential services will continue without disruption.
According to guidance provided to veterans, health care services will not be impacted. VA Medical Centers, outpatient clinics, and Vet Centers remain open. Veterans will continue to receive benefits such as compensation, pension, education, and housing assistance. Applications for headstones, markers, and burial benefits will also continue, and the Board of Veterans’ Appeals will move forward with case decisions. Contact centers and the Veterans Crisis Line remain available 24/7.
However, several programs are temporarily suspended. These include veteran career counseling, transition assistance programs, and the GI Bill Hotline. VA regional benefits offices will be closed, and public affairs outreach will cease. The VA will not provide permanent headstone placement or grounds maintenance at national cemeteries during the shutdown. Applications for pre-need burials and new presidential memorial certificates will not be processed until operations resume.
Manatee County Veterans Services encourages local veterans and families to reach out for assistance in navigating these changes. Support and guidance are available by contacting their office at (941) 745-3795.
