Gulf Islands Ferry to Expand Service With New Stops to Ease Anna Maria Island Traffic
Relief may soon be on the way for drivers heading to and from Anna Maria Island. The Gulf Islands Ferry is preparing to expand its service with several new stops aimed at reducing congestion and improving access to the barrier island.
Since launching, the ferry has already taken more than 10,000 cars off the road each month, according to county officials. The system currently operates with two stops, but future expansion could include one at Coquina South and as many as two in Palmetto. Plans for Palmetto include a partnership stop near the Marriott Preserve and another potential location close to the Green Bridge, pending further discussion with the city.
Additionally, the county is considering a stop at Cortez Marina, citing its proximity and convenience. The Anna Maria City Pier, a central hub for the ferry, is also undergoing renovations after sustaining damage during the 2024 hurricane season.
The long-term vision includes a larger ferry transporting passengers between Bradenton and Palmetto to the island, with smaller pontoon boats handling movement around the island itself. Officials say the effort is designed to ease parking shortages and alleviate the heavy traffic that often burdens residents and visitors.
Manatee County commissioners believe the expanded ferry network will strengthen regional connectivity, improve tourism access, and reduce roadway stress during peak seasons.
