High-Voltage Scare on Manatee Avenue: Workers Stranded After Lift Contacts Power Line
A Tuesday morning fire alarm at the Fit2Run offices on Manatee Avenue West quickly escalated into a high-voltage emergency when glaziers working on the building came dangerously close to disaster.
Shortly after 9 a.m., Bradenton Fire Department crews responded to a routine alarm but discovered a far more serious situation. A high-reach lift being used by contractors had come into contact with a 140,000-volt high-tension power line. The incident left the lift's truck inoperable and the workers stranded in the boom.
Emergency responders discovered extensive electrical damage at the site, including a nearby office building where an underground conduit became energized at the point of grounding. Despite the severe electrical hazard, no injuries were reported.
Cedar Hammock Fire Rescue provided mutual aid and assisted with the safe removal of the stranded workers. Florida Power & Light responded quickly to secure the scene and address the damaged electrical infrastructure.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by overhead power lines and the importance of electrical safety on construction sites.
