Higher Tides Expected This Weekend as Full Moon Brings Minor Flooding Risk
Higher-than-normal tide levels associated with the upcoming full moon cycle are expected on Friday evening, January 2, and Saturday, January 3, 2026, with peak water levels anticipated near midnight. Forecasters say water levels could rise above two feet in some coastal locations.
While significant flooding is not expected, minor tidal flooding may occur in low-lying coastal and riverfront areas. Residents and visitors are urged to remain aware of changing conditions, particularly during overnight high tides.
Areas that could see minor impacts include Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, the Bradenton Riverfront, the Palmetto Riverfront, Cortez Village, Palmetto Point, Rubonia, and Terra Ceia Island.
Local officials advise the public to use caution when traveling near waterways, avoid flooded areas, and never drive through water-covered roadways, even if the flooding appears shallow.
Forecast maps show varying water depths, with orange markers indicating potential flooding of 0.1 to 1 foot, and red markers indicating areas that could experience more than 1 foot of water. Conditions may change rapidly depending on winds and weather patterns, so residents are encouraged to stay alert and monitor local updates throughout the weekend.
