Holmes Beach Marine Officers Rescue Injured Pelican During Patrol
Holmes Beach Police Department marine officers rescued an injured pelican on Wednesday after spotting the bird while on patrol in local waters.
The officers quickly intervened and safely secured the pelican, later nicknamed “Petey,” to ensure it received proper care. The bird was transported to Wildlife Inc. Education & Rehabilitation Center in Bradenton, where wildlife experts will provide treatment and rehabilitation.
Officials said the rescue highlights the department’s commitment to protecting not only residents and visitors, but also the area’s native wildlife. The quick response by marine officers helped ensure the pelican could be safely removed from harm and taken to a facility equipped to care for injured animals.
Wildlife Inc. Education & Rehabilitation Center, which specializes in caring for sick and injured wildlife, will monitor Petey’s condition and work toward returning the pelican to the wild once it has recovered.
Holmes Beach Police Department officials also recognized the ongoing work of Wildlife Inc., noting the organization's important role in protecting and rehabilitating wildlife across the region.
