Holmes Beach Police Warn of Job Recruitment Scam Targeting Job Seekers
The Holmes Beach Police Department is alerting the public to a new phishing scam that targets individuals searching for employment by posing as legitimate job recruiters.
According to a recent advisory, the scam begins with an email claiming the recipient is a strong candidate for a job opportunity. The message may appear convincing, often including detailed and accurate information about the recipient’s work history. Scammers are able to gather this information from publicly available sources such as professional networking profiles, making the outreach seem credible.
The email typically comes from a personal account, such as a Gmail address, rather than an official corporate domain. In the message, the supposed recruiter claims the applicant’s resume falls short of company standards but offers to connect them with a so-called resume expert. Victims are urged to act quickly, with the implication that the job opportunity may disappear if they delay.
Authorities say this is where the scheme escalates. Individuals who agree to the referral are contacted by another party posing as a resume consultant who charges a fee for services. The job offer is not real, and any money sent is taken by the scammers.
Police emphasize that legitimate employers and recruiters do not require payment as part of the hiring process. Requests for money in exchange for job consideration are a significant warning sign of fraud.
Residents are encouraged to carefully review email addresses, noting that reputable recruiters typically use official business domains rather than free email services. The department also advises job seekers to be cautious of offers that appear unusually favorable or create a sense of urgency.
Officials urge anyone who encounters suspicious job offers to trust their instincts and avoid sharing personal information or sending money.
