Holmes Beach Unveils New Sea Turtle Flag in Celebration of 75th Anniversary
HOLMES BEACH – A new symbol of pride now flies over Holmes Beach City Hall as part of the city’s 75th anniversary celebration. Mayor Judy Titsworth and Digital and Media Strategist Matt McDonough unveiled a sea turtle-themed city flag this week, reflecting the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship and resilience.
The flag was formally introduced to city commissioners on April 8, with the help of Code Enforcement Chief James “JT” Thomas and Officer Nate Brown. The following morning, the new banner was raised below the American flag at city hall.
Designed without text or a city seal, the simple and striking flag features a sea turtle insignia against a carefully chosen shade of navy blue. Mayor Titsworth noted that the design is intentionally kid-friendly, making it easy for children to draw and connect with. The turtle theme supports ongoing city initiatives such as the Ad Hoc Clean Water Committee and the Islanders4CleanWater campaign.
Beyond environmental symbolism, the flag also pays tribute to the city’s resilience after enduring two hurricanes last fall.
Commissioners praised the design and the thoughtfulness behind it. Commissioner Terry Schaefer called it a home run, while Commissioner Dan Diggins described it as beautiful.
In addition to the flag now flying at city hall, plans are underway to produce smaller versions for residents to display at home and hand-held flags to distribute during parades and local events.
Looking ahead, Mayor Titsworth proposed celebrating the city’s milestone with an old-fashioned carnival and a revival of a city-themed play that was last performed 25 years ago. With a script in hand, she is seeking volunteers to bring the performance back to life.
The new flag is expected to become a lasting emblem of Holmes Beach’s heritage, values, and unity as it enters its next chapter.
