HOPE Family Services brought supporters together Saturday, October 10, for its A Night of HOPE Under the Stars gala, an event dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence and raising awareness of the resources available to individuals and families throughout Manatee County.
The gathering took place during October, which is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The annual observance encourages communities to recognize the impact of domestic violence, support survivors, honor those who have lost their lives to abuse, and promote prevention through education and community involvement.
HOPE Family Services is a Manatee County nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting safety, strength, and well-being for individuals affected by domestic violence. Its services include emergency safe shelter, counseling, safety planning, legal assistance, and support designed to help survivors rebuild their lives.
Community support plays an important role in sustaining these services. Donations to HOPE Family Services help provide essential resources for survivors and their children. Contributions of $1,000 can provide a child with a series of trauma-informed counseling sessions at school, while $500 can cover one week of meals for residents of the emergency shelter. A $250 donation can support legal assistance in obtaining an injunction for protection, and $100 can provide safety planning and a needs assessment for a woman experiencing a crisis.
In addition to financial contributions, HOPE Family Services offers several opportunities for community involvement throughout the year. Residents can volunteer, explore opportunities to serve on the organization’s board of directors, request educational speakers for community groups, schedule organizational tours, or subscribe to its newsletter to stay informed about programs and activities.
Thursday, October 15, is Wear Purple Day, an opportunity for residents, businesses, schools, and community organizations to show support for domestic violence survivors. Purple is the nationally recognized color of domestic violence awareness, representing solidarity with survivors and a commitment to ending abuse. Community members are encouraged to wear purple and help spread awareness about available resources.
While Domestic Violence Awareness Month brings increased attention to the issue, the need for assistance continues throughout the year. Domestic violence can affect individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and income levels and may involve physical abuse, emotional manipulation, threats, financial control, or other forms of coercion.
For individuals experiencing domestic violence, HOPE Family Services offers free, confidential assistance. Survivors do not have to be ready to leave a relationship to seek information, discuss safety concerns, or explore available options. The organization provides a 24-hour helpline, emergency shelter, counseling, advocacy, and assistance with protective injunctions.
Anyone needing help can contact HOPE Family Services’ 24-hour helpline at 941-755-6805. The organization’s outreach office can be reached at 941-747-8499. Information about services, volunteer opportunities, and donations is available at www.hopefamilyservice.org.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline also provides confidential assistance nationwide at 800-799-7233 or by texting START to 88788. Anyone facing immediate danger should call 911.
As Domestic Violence Awareness Month continues, HOPE Family Services encourages the community to recognize that awareness, financial support, volunteer involvement, and access to services can make a meaningful difference for survivors and families working toward safer futures.
