A new Thanksgiving tradition is coming to Manatee County as the Palmetto Marriott Resort & Spa and Fit2Run prepare to host the inaugural Manatee River Turkey Trot Bridge Run on Thursday, November 26. The event will bring runners, walkers, and families together for a scenic morning of fitness while raising funds for childhood cancer survivors.
The event will feature a 5K run and walk across the DeSoto Bridge, offering participants a rare opportunity to cross the Manatee River on foot while enjoying panoramic sunrise views. Organizers say the bridge will be closed to accommodate the race, creating a unique experience connecting the Bradenton and Palmetto communities.
Proceeds will benefit the Big Bill Foundation, a nonprofit organization established in honor of Fit2Run co-founder Bill Robinson. The foundation provides academic scholarships to young survivors of childhood cancer, helping them pursue higher education after overcoming serious medical challenges.
The new race builds on the popularity of Fit2Run’s established Florida Turkey Trot at Nathan Benderson Park, which attracts approximately 4,500 registered participants and sells out annually. Organizers hope the Manatee River event will become another Thanksgiving tradition for families throughout the region.
The morning will begin with a Kids Dash for children ages 12 and younger at 7:15 a.m., followed by the main 5K run and walk at 8 a.m. The family-friendly format encourages participation from runners of varying ages and fitness levels.
Participants will receive chip-timed race bibs, finisher medals, and commemorative race shirts. Following the race, the Palmetto Marriott Resort & Spa will host a post-race celebration featuring complimentary food and beverages.
The Palmetto Marriott Resort & Spa will serve as the event’s host location, providing a gathering place for participants and spectators before and after the race.
Beyond the competition, the inaugural Manatee River Turkey Trot Bridge Run aims to combine community involvement, holiday traditions, and charitable giving. By supporting scholarships for childhood cancer survivors, the event offers participants an opportunity to begin Thanksgiving Day with an activity that benefits young people working toward their educational goals.
The race is scheduled for Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, 2026, at the Palmetto Marriott Resort & Spa in Palmetto. The Kids Dash begins at 7:15 a.m., followed by the 5K at 8 a.m.
