John Chappie Aims for 20 Years in Bradenton Beach Public Office
Bradenton Beach Mayor John Chappie has announced his intention to seek another two-year term, aiming to extend his time in public office to 20 years. Chappie, a resident of the city for nearly five decades, has served more than 12 years as mayor in two separate six-year spans, along with six years as a city commissioner.
Chappie, who confirmed his candidacy on July 25, said he hopes to continue leading the city through recovery efforts following the destructive 2024 hurricane season. The Manatee County Supervisor of Elections currently lists him as the only active candidate in the upcoming municipal election, though the qualifying period has not yet begun.
Commissioner Jan Vosburgh, who has served on the commission for 11 years, announced she will not run for reelection. Commissioner Debbie Scaccianoce, appointed in December 2023 to fill a vacancy, will run for a full term. Commissioner Ralph Cole, whose term was extended to 2025 due to ward boundary changes, has not yet decided whether he will seek reelection after 10 years of service.
The qualifying period for candidates runs from noon Monday, Aug. 25, to noon Friday, Aug. 29. Requirements include proof of residency, appointment of a campaign treasurer, opening a campaign account, and payment of a qualifying fee equal to 4% of the annual salary for the position. Commissioners earn $4,800 annually, and the mayor earns $9,600.
Bradenton Beach had 486 registered voters as of June 20, down from 596 in May 2024. Election Day is set for Tuesday, Nov. 4. Additional information is available at votemanatee.com.
