Josh Cramer Named Next Chief of Bradenton Police Department
The Bradenton City Council has officially confirmed retired Assistant Chief Josh Cramer as the city’s next Chief of Police. Cramer, a veteran of the Bradenton Police Department with nearly three decades of service, was nominated by Mayor Gene Brown and will assume the role on July 8 following the retirement of Chief Melanie Bevan.
Cramer began his career with BPD in 1995, steadily rising through the ranks to become Assistant Chief before his retirement in 2022. Though retired, he remained active with the department as a reserve officer, continuing his commitment to public safety and the community.
In 2022, Cramer was elected to the Bradenton City Council and currently serves as Vice Mayor. He will be required to resign his council seat before being sworn in as Chief of Police. Following his resignation, the City Council may appoint a new representative from Ward 3 to serve the remainder of his term.
Cramer’s extensive law enforcement background and familiarity with the department were key factors in his appointment. As he prepares to return to lead the department, the city anticipates a smooth transition and continued progress in public safety initiatives under his guidance.
