A Manatee County judge ordered 51-year-old Kieran Cantwell held without bond Friday as he faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of his 85-year-old father, Richard Cantwell.
During the hearing, Cantwell’s defense sought his release under strict pretrial conditions, proposing GPS ankle monitoring, a curfew, medication compliance and placement in the home of another relative.
Prosecutors opposed his release, pointing to Cantwell’s history of domestic incidents and previous altercations involving his father. The prosecution referenced at least two prior physical incidents, including a 2006 domestic battery charge that was later dropped.
The judge ultimately determined that pretrial release conditions would not adequately protect the community. Factors considered included Cantwell’s previous conduct involving his father, the alleged unprovoked and unpredictable nature of the fatal incident, his reported mental health history and the vulnerability of his father, who was serving as a caregiver at the time.
The case stems from an August 20 incident at a home in the 500 block of Magellan Drive. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office responded after Cantwell’s mother called 911.
Deputies arrived to find Kieran Cantwell outside the residence. According to investigators, witnesses reported that Cantwell punched his father during a dispute, causing the 85-year-old to fall and strike his head on the floor.
Deputies found Richard Cantwell unresponsive on the kitchen floor and bleeding from his nose and mouth. Emergency medical personnel transported him to a hospital, where he underwent surgery for a brain bleed. He was intubated but did not regain consciousness and was later pronounced dead.
Cantwell’s mother, Jacqueline Cantwell, told investigators that her son lived with her and Richard Cantwell. She also reported that Kieran Cantwell had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and had received treatment through Centerstone for several years.
Cantwell remains in the Manatee County Jail without bond. His arraignment is scheduled for October 16.
