Residents and visitors in coastal areas of Manatee County are being advised to prepare for higher-than-normal tides on Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31, as king tides could cause temporary flooding in low-lying neighborhoods and along waterfront roadways.
According to Manatee County Public Safety, elevated water levels are expected during the morning hours on both days, potentially affecting several coastal communities.
Areas that may experience tidal flooding include Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Cortez Village, Palmetto Point, Rubonia, Terra Ceia Island, and the Bradenton and Palmetto riverfronts.
King tides occur when the gravitational forces of the sun and moon combine to produce unusually high tides. Although these events are naturally occurring, they can temporarily flood streets, parking areas, sidewalks, and properties near the shoreline, even without significant rainfall.
County officials are encouraging motorists to avoid driving through flooded roadways, as water depth can be difficult to determine and saltwater can damage vehicles. Residents should also avoid parking in low-lying areas that are susceptible to tidal flooding.
Those living or traveling near the coast should remain alert to changing water levels, particularly during morning high tides. Waterfront businesses, property owners, and residents in flood-prone neighborhoods may want to take precautions to protect vehicles and belongings.
The anticipated king tides coincide with Halloween weekend, when additional pedestrian and vehicle traffic may be present in coastal communities.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather conditions and public safety updates throughout the weekend. While king tides are predictable astronomical events, their impacts can be intensified by strong winds, heavy rainfall, or other weather conditions.
Manatee County Public Safety reminds the public to exercise caution near rising water and never attempt to drive through flooded streets.
