Lakewood Ranch Man Rescues Bald Eagle from Alligator-Infested Lake
Lakewood Ranch, FL — A Lakewood Ranch resident is being hailed a hero after braving an alligator-filled lake to save an injured bald eagle.
Over the weekend, Doug Hay, nearly 70, leapt into action after hearing a loud crash outside his home. He spotted an eagle struggling in the middle of the lake while another circled above—likely the aftermath of a mid-air clash between the two birds.
Hay, a lifelong animal lover, didn’t hesitate. He discarded his phone and flip-flops before diving into the water, fully aware that the lake is home to a 7-foot alligator. He swam nearly 100 yards to reach the eagle, which then gripped his forearm with its talons, causing minor injuries.
Exhausted but determined, Hay swam back to shore with the bird and, along with his wife, transported it to the Wildlife Center of Southwest Florida in Venice. The eagle suffered a deep wound, likely from a talon strike, but is now in stable condition and receiving antibiotic treatment.
Pam DeFouw, the center’s executive director, confirmed the eagle will undergo physical therapy to restore its ability to fly. She praised Hay’s courageous act, though she noted the potential dangers involved in such rescues.
Despite the risks, Hay said he wouldn’t change a thing. “It’s the symbol of our country,” he said. “Of course I’d save it.”
